Racist attacks against migrants and LGBTQ increasing in Cyprus

Attacks against migrants with racist motives and against LGBTQ individuals appear to be on the rise in Cyprus.
This is reported by the island’s police authorities. Those most affected are immigrants working as so-called food delivery drivers on scooters, mostly from countries like India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, Cyprus Mail reports.
51 attacks were recorded in the past two years, with 42 people arrested. Additionally, 54 racist incidents were reported last year, 30 of which led to criminal proceedings.
LGBTQ-related crimes also increased, with 17 cases reported last year and 9 resulting in prosecutions.
The Education Ministry reported 547 racist incidents in schools during the 2023–24 academic year. Lawmakers urged the government to adopt a zero-tolerance policy against hate and violence.
